Emergency Action Plan (EAP)

There are 3 key positions on each team in an Emergency. They are:

  1. The Charge Person
  2. The Call Person
  3. The Guide

The duties of these people are as detailed below.

The Charge Person:

  1. Assess the situation (injured player)
  2. Do not move the player unless the player can move him or herself. EXCEPTION: If there is a suspected head, neck or back injury, or player lost consciousness discourage the player from moving except where there is an airway/breathing problem.
  3. Leave players equipment in place. Remove mouth guard.
  4. If the first aid or trainers kit is inadequate for the situation, or an ambulance is required, send the Call Person to call an ambulance.
  5. Keep the injured player calm and warm.
  6. If the player can be moved, help them off the field.
  7. Record information about the injury and first aid given.
  8. Wait with the player until the ambulance arrives.

The Call Person:

  1. The call person must be aware of the information required when calling for an ambulance. They must also have access to a phone. A cell phone is OK, a landline is better.
  2. Clearly give the location of the injured player and the phone number you are calling from. Do not hang up until the dispatcher tells you to. Ask for an ETA for the ambulance.
  3. Report to the charge person and help with the injured player.
  4. Ensure you know the injured player’s Next of Kin and Health Card number.
  5. Collect the players belongings and street clothes and accompany him/her to the hospital

The Guide:

  1. Stay with the Call Person until ETA of ambulance is known.
  2. Meet the ambulance at the entrance to the field and guide them to the injured player.
